Sézane: Autumn Highlights

Sézane is back in Amsterdam with its new autumn wardrobe, presented in a canal house. This season, the familiar romance is expressed through fuller silhouettes: wider trousers, generous knitwear and outerwear with a stronger shape. Suede, wool and corduroy appear in chocolate brown, olive, rust and cream, a palette that makes me think of Jardin du Luxembourg in autumn.

What interests me as a stylist is how differently the pieces can be combined. Some of the strongest looks come from less obvious pairings: a crochet top with tailored trousers, generous knitwear with suede, and a zip-up over a crisp blue shirt and jeans. The silhouettes combine French preppy and Ivy League references with Scandinavian restraint. Familiar codes of French dressing appear in crisp white shirts, denim, trench coats and loafers. The shoe collection includes low-heeled slingbacks with a relaxed shape and my favourite, a soft leather ballet flat with a gathered upper, keyhole opening and tie fastening.

Earlier this year in Paris, Sézane showed Vivian Maier’s street photography alongside its collection. For autumn, work by Ghanaian-British photographer James Barnor is presented among books, furniture and clothes.

Following its earlier Amsterdam pop-up, I hope Sézane opens a permanent shop here. I still prefer shopping offline: trying clothes on, feeling the fabrics and having a conversation. Sézane knows how to turn a shop into a destination. For now, Paris it is.
