The shape immediately caught my eye. Suspended within the outer layer of hand-blown glass sits a rounded form inspired by the traditional Chinese hulu. For centuries, the double-gourd shape has been associated with good fortune, remedies and longevity.
Founded in Paris by Pierre Mergui, Première Peau gives perfumers unusual creative freedom. Specialist glassmakers in the Oise produce each hand-blown double-walled borosilicate bottle. Small variations in the glass mean that every piece is unique. The studio is based in Deauville.
The inspiration for the hulu shape dates back to Mergui’s years studying in Shanghai. His years in China found their way into the bottle itself, bringing together French haute perfumery and Chinese symbolism. For me, this interplay makes Première Peau interesting.
